What is Foil Stamping?

Foil stamping is a highly reflective metallic effect that is an eye-catching way to highlight a logo or a creative pattern. Foil stamping is a metallic leafing, custom formed into the desired shape that then gets hot stamped into paper. The most common colors for foil stamping are gold or silver, but it is also available in copper, dark blue, teal, red, pink, green, purple or black

What are Rounded Corners?

This is where we round the corners of your card either an 1/8” which is like what you would see on a credit card or ¼” which is a much more exaggerated shape that is trending right now. (See top of page for Montreal Printing business card picture for an example.)

What are Printed Edges?

Edge printing is a new finish that allows us to paint the edges of you card. This is much more noticeable on thicker “layered” cards. This effect makes a very nice presentation when the cards are stacked on a desk or display area. This really gives an elegant look to any card and is available in many colors such as copper, silver, gold, pink, orange, Orange 2 “burnt orange” blue, green, lime green, red, plum, chocolate, mocha, yellow, light green, hunter green, sky blue, royal blue, reflex blue, purple & black

What are Layers?

Layers refers to the thickness, we basically sandwich 2 or 3 cards together to get that extra thick stock. 1 layer is 18pt, two layers is 34pt or 3 layers is 50 pts thick. We also refer to embossed layers, this means that we can emboss 1 layer, so it does not show through the other side or we can emboss two layers to have the same or different embossing per side. We also refer to die-cut layers, this means you can have custom cuts or shapes on 1 layer, 2 layers or all 3 layers. In the sample below, you will see a city scape that is die-cut on the 1st layer which gives a relief from the layer under it. .

What is Spot Varnish?

This is also known as High gloss Spot UV varnish. Spot Varnish is a finish that allows us to highlight any area of your card with a very glossy varnish. This can be used to enhance a logo or on a creative pattern or repetitive pattern. This shiny effect really pops over the matte finish of the rest of the card.

What is Embossing?

Embossing is where we punch out a special shape like a logo, this raises the area off the card which is felt as your fingers brush over it. This is a tactile effect that is very impressive. When you emboss 1- layer card it does come through the other side as debossed, so you need to design the other side of your card accordingly as not to overlap it with important text or images that could get warped. Another way to avoid having to design around the embossing which can reduce your real-estate space is to do 2 - layer cards and emboss only 1 layer leaving the back of your card smooth and open for as much image or information as needed.  De-bossing is the same effect but punched into to the card instead of pucnhed out. De-bossing is illustrated in the in the example below with the repetitive cross hatch pattern.

What is Die-cutting?

Die-cutting is where we can cut out custom shapes into or around your cards, this can be done on 1, 2 or 3 layers if you have chosen multiple layered card.
The example below shows an example of a custom shape die-cut business card. This is a very interesting way to stand out from the rest of the business cards that are out there.

What are Pantone Colors?

Pantone is an exact color matching system, so that no matter where in the world you are printing - the colors results are the same. Most printing nowadays is done in four color process C.M.Y.K (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow & Black) Those 4 primary colors can make up any color under the sun with exception to metallic colors. This process is widely used in the industry, Montreal Printing included. While this is a much more cost effective printing method, colors can vary from one printing company to another. So, if exact color matching is critical to your brand then Pantone colors is your solution.  One thing to keep in mind with any type of printing method, colors can vary when printed on different types of stock especially coated vs uncoated. So, it is equally important to stay consistent with the paper you print on. Choosing Pantone colors is usually done by a designer who picks colors from a pantone book to ensure it is the color that is needed.

How to Prepare the Artwork for Your Elite Cards

To ensure that your order is fulfilled smoothly, please follow these guidelines:

  • Safe Zone
Please adjust your text and important graphics to be 1" inside of the finished size on all four sides.
  • Colors
The file needs to be in CYMK color not RGB
  • Resolution
The resolution of your file needs to be 120dpi
  • Submitting Files
We prefer a pdf file (1 file for each side), if this is not possible please send a psd, ai or eps file. Make sure all fonts are converted to outline. After making your order you will be prompted to upload your print-ready files.
  • Blacks
LARGE AREAS OF BLACK: Rich black ( 40% Cyan, 40% Magenta, 30% Yellow, 100% Black ) should be used for large areas of black and will give a deep solid black finish.
SMALL BLACK TEXT: 100% black ( 0% Cyan, 0% Magenta, 0% Yellow, 100% Black ) should be used for small black text (12pt and smaller) and lines, this will result in crisp text and edges.
  • For a Blue that does not come out Purple
To get a proper blue that does not print purple the Magenta has to be less than or equal to the (Cyan value - 30) The reverse is true if you want to print purple
